Sanjid Mahmud, a visual artist from Dhaka, Bangladesh, specializes in sculpture and drawing. A graduate of the University of Dhaka with a degree in sculpture, his artistic practice extends beyond traditional forms to include performance art. His work is characterized by strong, expressive lines and a deep engagement with socio-political themes, human existence, and the rhythms of daily life in public spaces.

As a performance artist, Sanjid explores the act of breathing, the tension between inhalation and suffocation, and the psychological impact of claustrophobia. His piece Claustrophobia reflects on the suppression of free thought, open dialogue, and the yearning for unrestrained human expression. “This work,” he explains, “is about wanting to fill one’s lungs with a deep breath but not being able to do so.”

Sanjid is a founding member of Daagi Art Garage, the Director of Chanderpur Art Residency, and the Project Coordinator at the Dhaka Live Art Biennale. His interdisciplinary approach merges real-life experiences with surreal imagination, creating works that are both deeply personal and socially relevant. Whether through intuitive sculptures, spontaneous performances, or impulsive paintings, he seamlessly integrates art into his daily existence.

As a Bangladeshi artist, Sanjid acknowledges the challenges of navigating the global art scene with limited exposure. However, his participation in international art residencies has broadened his perspectives, allowing him to reinterpret his experiences in new and dynamic ways. His ongoing practice is a continuous journey of exploration, adaptation, and self-discovery.
